Max C. Smith Company

Indoor air pollution is one of the top 5 environmental risks to public health.  Most Americans spend nearly 95% of their time indoors, mostly in their homes.  We want our customers to live comfortably with the air systems that we provide for them, and we offer the following tips to make your home not only a comfortable place to live, but a healthy one as well.

Indoor Air Quality advice:

Problem:  Your family is having a few minor health issues.
Tip:  There are a lot of things in your home that could contribute to you becoming sick.  Try making a few changes around the house!

  • Change your furnace filter regularly
  • Choose hard flooring vs. carpeting
  • Run a bathroom fan after showers to decrease the likelihood of mold build-up
  • Vacuum with upgraded, hepa filter cleaner
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector

Heating advice:

Problem:  The cost of your heating system is higher than it should be.
Tip:  Use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your settings.  This will help save energy and regulate the temperature of your home when you are sleeping or not at home during the workday.

Air Conditioning advice:

Problem:  While some areas of your house are cool and comfortable, others are hot and muggy.
Tip:  Use ceiling fans to increase air circulation and expedite the cool air movement to all areas of your home.  This will also cool the upper floors to where heat escapes.

Zoning and Dehumifidication advice:

Problem:  As the seasons change, different areas of your house become too cold or too hot.
Tip:  Have a zoning system installed in your home which will provide you with a custom comfort level, as well as save energy.

Problem: Your house feels damp and muggy.
Tip:  Excess moisture not only makes you feel uncomfortable, but it also causes contaminants such as dust mites, bacteria and mold.  To keep the humidity levels down in the summer, install a central dehumidifier.  A central dehumidifier works independently, but in conjunction with your air conditioner to control excess moisture.

Roofing advice:

Problem:  Your gutters are not draining properly.
Tip:  Have your gutters cleaned once a year to keep them clean from debris.  This will keep water and ice from backing up into your shingles, which can cause damage that results in roofing leaks.

Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency
Homeowners can now get a tax credit for as much as $1500 for money they spend on energy improvements for their home!  Because this is a tax credit and not a deduction, you can subtract expenditures directly from next year's federal income tax bill.

Energy saving purchases that qualify for the federal tax credit include:

  • High efficiency heating equipment
  • High efficiency cooling equipment
  • Tankless water heaters
